Chain-link options we install
Black vinyl-coated chain-link
This is the version most people picture when they say they want chain-link but do not want it to look like chain-link. It is the same galvanized steel fence underneath, wrapped in a bonded vinyl coat — usually black, sometimes green. Two things happen. It disappears: black mesh reads as a dark line against grass and trees instead of a bright silver grid, so you notice the yard and not the fence. And the coating adds a second barrier over the galvanizing, which matters on a fence that lives outside for twenty years. It costs more than plain galvanized. On a back property line nobody looks at, that premium is hard to justify. On a fence you see from the kitchen window, it is usually the part of the quote people are gladdest they paid for.
Galvanized chain-link
The standard, and still the least expensive way to put a secure line around a property. Zinc-coated steel mesh on steel posts — it does not rot, it does not need paint, and it shrugs off Virginia winters. What separates a fence that stays tight from one that sags in five years is not the mesh, it is the framework: post diameter, wall thickness, how deep the corners and gate posts are set, and whether the run is finished with a top rail or a tension wire. Corner and gate posts carry all the load, so those are the ones worth over-building.
Residential chain-link for yards, dogs and kids
For a yard, chain-link does one thing better than anything else at the price: it contains without closing the yard in. You keep the sightline to the kids and the dog, and to the rest of the yard, which a six-foot privacy fence takes away. Four feet is the usual residential height, six if you have a jumper. If you have a digger, ask for bottom tension wire — it is a small line on the quote and it is the difference between a fence that works and a dog in the neighbour’s yard. Where chain-link is the wrong pick is privacy. It hides nothing by design. If you want the yard screened, that is a wood or vinyl conversation.
Heights, gauges and gates
Height is driven by purpose and by what your locality and HOA allow: four feet is typical for a residential yard, six for security or a determined dog, higher for commercial and industrial perimeters. Gauge is the thickness of the wire — lower number, heavier wire — and it is where a cheap quote usually hides. Gates deserve their own thought: a walk gate and a drive gate wide enough for a mower, a truck or a trailer are different builds, and the posts they hang on need to be set for the swing.
