What you’ll spend up front
Every project is different, but as a rough guide for installed privacy fencing in the Roanoke area:
- Wood privacy fence: typically the lower-cost option per linear foot. Pressure-treated pine is the most affordable; cedar and board-on-board cost more for a richer look and longer life.
- Vinyl privacy fence: usually runs noticeably higher per linear foot than basic wood, landing closer to (or above) premium cedar.

- Wood benefits from a clean and a fresh stain or sealer every two to four years to fight Virginia’s humidity and sun. Boards can warp, cup, or rot over time and occasionally need replacing. A well-maintained wood fence lasts roughly 15–20 years.
- Vinyl needs little more than an occasional rinse with the hose. It won’t rot, won’t need painting, and commonly lasts 25–30+ years. No recurring stain cost.
Looks and feel
Wood gives you that warm, natural, classic look and can be stained any color — it’s hard to beat for curb appeal on a traditional Roanoke home. Vinyl reads cleaner and more modern, stays bright without upkeep, and comes in white, tan, and wood-grain textures.
So which should you choose?
- Choose wood if you want the lowest upfront cost or a specific natural look, and you don’t mind periodic staining.
- Choose vinyl if you’d rather pay more once and essentially forget about maintenance — especially if you’re staying in the home long term.
